Headteacher news 7-7-23

Wow! I cannot believe how much has taken place since I last posted a blog for the website.

We’ve recently completed seven transition evenings, 4 sports days, 1 summer fair and had an incredible musical showcase afternoon where we were treated to a drum solo, a flute solo, some solo singers, a pair of violinists and some amazing singing from our school choir. Peter Pan Production

Since last writing, we have also been treated to a set of incredible performances of Peter Pan from our KS2 drama group. The children, under the stewardship of Miss Hatton and her team were absolutely amazing and blew me away with their acting, singing, dancing and most of all their teamwork.

Quad Kids / Football

With thanks to Mr Armstrong and Mrs Mitchell, we attended the Y3/4 and Y5/6 quad kids event at Scarborough 6th Form. We were the overall winners of the Y5/6 competition and placed amazingly well in the Y3/4 competition. With many first places for individual performances, the team were amazing and were the best they could be.

Towards the end of May, the boys and girls took on their counterparts from Gladstone Road. The boys ran out easy winners but the real drama was in the girls match. After being 4-1 up and then losing 5-4, the girls rallied to score a last minute equaliser.

Ready – Set – Read

Ready Set Read!
Libraries across North Yorkshire are getting ready to Kick off this’s year’s Summer Reading Challenge which is themed around the power of play, sport, games and physical activity. The Summer Reading Challenge is aimed at children aged 4-11, encouraging them to keep reading and enjoying books throughout the summer. Children can sign up at any North Yorkshire library from 15th July and will receive their collector’s folder to get them started. There are stickers and other rewards to collect along the way and children complete the challenge by reading at least 6 books by 9th September. All children who complete Ready Set Read! will be awarded a medal and a certificate. It’s FREE to join your local library and FREE to sign up for Ready Set Read! And look out for loads of fantastic events for children and families happening in our libraries throughout the summer holidays!

Lets Talk Sensory Processing – An opportunity for parents and carers of children with SEND. 

This session for parents and carers of children with SEND will focus on sensory preferences, differences and how to find a calm state. The session has been developed in partnership with NYC Inclusion and NHS Occupational Therapy. It will be presented by Rachel Comerford, Specialist Lead for Communication & Interaction in North Yorkshire.

We will consider the following questions:

-What is sensory integration? Why do people respond differently to their environment? What is the purpose behind actions? Is it ok to intervene and how do we go about it? How can we develop self-regulation?

There will also be an opportunity for Q&A, including talking about individual scenarios and problem-solving specific sensory conundrums!

This session will be taking part on Wednesday 12th July and will run at two separate times during the day. Both will be held on Teams. The links to sign up for these can be found below:

Summer Sun Safety Message (Previously shared on class dojo)

At Northstead School, we expect that you will apply a high factor sun-cream to your child each morning in the summer months to protect your child’s skin from the harmful effects of the sun.
As the weather improves we would like to encourage sun safe behaviour in school by helping children to avoid sunburn and overexposure to the sun.
To support us in this, we ask that parents and carers;
· Apply high factor sun cream (recommended factor 50) to children BEFORE they come to school.
· Send a labelled bottle of sun cream in to school for children to re-apply at lunch time. Teachers will not apply suncream.
· Provide a sun hat that shades the face and eyes that can be worn in the playground at lunch and playtimes (please ensure these are named).
· Ensure that children’s water bottles are kept clean and filled with fresh water every day.

Beatboxing – What a performance!

Thanks to Mrs Wright (Music leader), we were entertained for an hour by an expert beatboxer. He then worked with our y6 children on creating their own beatboxing skills. What an amazing opportunity for the children.
