Headteacher News 17-5-24

 Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of Headteacher news….

It was great to see Miss Galinski and Miss Seeley returning to school on their keeping in touch days this week. It was also great to welcome to the two newest additions to the Northstead family into school this week. Mrs Clubley and baby Lilah and Mrs Swales with baby Ophelia this week.

On Monday, Mr Turner will begin employment with us as a part time caretaker. Mr Turner will complement the site staff already in place. You may see Mr Turner around school completing jobs inside and outside the building. We know you will welcome him to the Northstead Community. We are sure he will be an amazing addition and help to add some sparkle to our environment!

On Wednesday next week, Mrs Robertson (Year three teacher) will be spending her last day with us. We will miss her greatly and thank her for the amazing contribution she has made to school. We know she will enjoy her new role with Coventry University.

The children gave their all and demonstrated a high level of resilience in what I can only say were some of the hardest maths questions I have seen in a sats paper for a long time. Whatever their outcome, we are proud of their hard work and determination to be the best they can be. We obviously hope for the best results we can but know that one test on one day does not determine how good you are at something. A huge well done to all children.

Right up to today, we had two classes (Class 8 and 15) with 100% attendance for this week. Unfortunately, they fell at the final hurdle! A better week for attendance this week but Monday and Friday are still a big concern for attendance. Every day in school counts.

Parking outside school is possibly at the most dangerous level we have seen. Parking over junctions, parking on zig zags, parking on dangerous corners on double yellows. We appreciate that parking and pickup is a challenging time because of the limited parking available but this does not mean parking in a way or place that could cause a child a serious injury. Please be considerate of the safety of all of our community.

Is it illegal to park on zig-zag lines outside schools?

It’s always illegal to park on yellow zig-zag lines anywhere. Rule 243 of the Highway Code indicates a range of places where motorists must not park, including on a bend, a dropped kerb or the brow of a hill. It also states that drivers must not park near a school entrance, anywhere that would prevent access for emergency services or near a bus stop, tram stop or taxi rank. Again, the rule will often — but not always — be made obvious with yellow zig-zags on the road.

Parking outside a school specifically may obstruct visibility for parents and children trying to cross the road and is thus highly dangerous.

We hosted a SEND review evening in school this past week and it was a huge success. This will be repeated as a model in future years. Thanks to Mrs Greenway for the amazing work she put into organising this and to all parents/carers who took the time to attend this important review time for their child(ren).

Buddy Benches

An amazing well done to our school council who have worked hard over the year to raise money for some buddy benches in our playgrounds. We now have one of these in KS1 and in KS2. A place for children to sit and chat or a place to sit if you are looking for a buddy to play with. The children flocked to them today. Well done school council and well done to Mr Houston for putting them together so quickly!

CLASS 10 have completed their PSHE learning on ‘Relationships’ by making ‘appreciation’ flags. The children really enjoyed discussing what they are thankful for and made insightful comments when thinking about how other people’s lives may be different from theirs. Well done!

An amazing opportunity for our children to meet an England International Rugby Player. Zoe went to St Martin’s Primary and then onto Scalby School as a young girl and has since went on to represent England in Rugby Union. In 2021, Zoe was named World Rugby Women’s player of the year!

Take the opportunity to meet an amazing sportsperson at our local rugby club (Scarborough Rugby Club) on 31st May 2024. Further details also in the poster below.
