History at Northstead Community Primary School

History Leader: Mrs Erica Linsdell (Mrs Lucy Trousdale from September 2025)

Mrs Linsdell holds strategic responsibility for the research, development and implementation of the school’s history curriculum.

She wrote our history scheme of learning from September 2023 to February 2024 to ensure it reflected local, regional, national and world history. A keen historian, Mrs Linsdell has reinvigorated our history curriculum, bringing it to life with amazing experiences for the children to enhance their learning.

Her leadership, enthusiasm for history and dedication to bringing it to life has ensured the teaching and learning of history for all children is the best that it can be.

History at Northstead – A Guide for Parents and Carers

At Northstead Community Primary School, we aim to spark children’s curiosity about the past and provide them with a structured understanding of British and world history. Our history curriculum is designed to help pupils develop a coherent knowledge of key historical events, figures, and societies.

When is History Taught?

  • The main history curriculum is currently taught during the Spring and Summer terms.
  • During Autumn Term 2, Years 1-3 focus on the Gunpowder Plot and its impact on society today.
  • Years 4-6 study Remembrance, exploring why and how we honour those who have served in conflicts throughout history.

History Curriculum Overview

How Do We Teach History?

Teachers follow our own bespoke history scheme of learning, ensuring lessons are well-planned and engaging – adapting them where necessary.

Lessons include artefacts, books, external visitors, and school trips to enhance learning.

Teachers use structured planning and key historical vocabulary to ensure lessons are informative and accessible.

Every lesson starts with tailored questions to reinforce previous learning (e.g., “Last lesson… Last week… Last term…”).

Pupils’ understanding is assessed through questioning, lesson outcomes, and formative assessment.

How Can Parents Support?

Talk to your child about what they are learning in history.

Visit historical sites, museums, or use online resources to explore topics further.

Encourage reading books related to historical topics studied in school.

Our aim is to ensure that every child develops a love for history, understands the past, and can make connections to the present and future. Thank you for your support in fostering their learning!
