Science at Northstead Community Primary School

Science Leader: Mrs Katy Hopper

Katy joined Northstead in September 2025 and is responsible for the research, development and implementation of the science curriculum at Northstead.

She is working towards gaining the accreditation for the Primary Science Quality Mark for Northstead Community Primary School and has grand plans to use our grounds to enhance our teaching and learning in science, including creating a science garden behind our library for all children to access throughout their time at Northstead.

Science at Northstead – A Parent’s Guide

At Northstead Community Primary School, we believe that high-quality science teaching is key to sparking curiosity and critical thinking in children. Our goal is to help all students, regardless of background, develop a strong understanding of the world and prepare for future opportunities in science and technology.

How We Teach Science

We follow the White Rose Science scheme, which ensures:
✔ Clear, step-by-step learning so children build confidence.
✔ Hands-on, practical science activities to encourage exploration.
✔ A structured approach that aligns with the National Curriculum.

Lesson Structure

🔹 Starting with Retrieval – Every lesson begins with a quick recap to refresh knowledge.
🔹 Learning Objectives & Key Vocabulary – Teachers introduce the day’s topic with clear goals and important vocabulary to know and understand.
🔹 Practical Science – Children take part in experiments, investigations, observations, and outdoor learning.
🔹 Discussion & Questioning – Lessons include guided discussions to deepen understanding.

Making Science Fun & Engaging

🎥 We use videos (BBC Bitesize, Twinkl, etc.) to bring science to life.
🔬 Children will conduct experiments and use real-world examples to understand concepts.
🌿 Outdoor learning is encouraged—whether exploring the school grounds or going on local trips.

Assessment & Progress

✅ Teachers check understanding throughout lessons with questions and discussions.

At Northstead, we want all children to love science, feel confident in their abilities, and see the subject as an exciting part of their learning journey! 🚀🔭🔬
